Rococo Flyknit

Taking inspiration from the extravagance of the Rococo period, these sneakers are bold, beautiful, and over-the-top

Prompted by an assignment from my Sewing Technology for Accessory Design class that required that we use a breathable Flyknit fabric in a sneaker design, I drew from my personal passion for historical garments. With the Flyknit mesh feeling so distinctly modern, I felt it was an interesting contrast when compared to the decorative embellishments of design styles past. I was drawn to Rococo specifically because it represents the extreme of frivolous decoration, to the point of almost gaudiness. The style also has a feminine appearance not typically associated with sneaker design that I wanted to explore.

The process involved hand dyeing the mesh, sewing the uppers, sculpting the sole and embellishments out of EVA foam, forming the uppers around a last, combining the pieces, and providing the finishing touches of laces and cording all in pursuit of a pair of shoes fit for Louis XV.
